Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Hot Tub Time Machine is, like you’ll probably guess reading the title, not a very serious movie about time travel. It’s a comedy in which a couple of friends, who really haven’t been that close for a while, decide to back to the place they used to go to during the holidays when they were young. They hope to revive the good old times. Unfortunately the little village has lost its former glory and they decide to enjoy their time there, despite the initial disappointment. They all jump into the hot tub and enjoy the alcohol. When they wake up the next day, the village has transformed.

Not only the village has changed, but also the time period. They’re back in the eighties during a time they actually were there. And like it seems to happen in each time travel movie, they have to try to get back to the present without changing anything.
It’s a fun setup for a movie, which disappoints in its execution. The fact that they are in the eighties could have been used way better than it has here. It also seems that they gave everyone some brightly colored clothes and thought that was enough to bring back the feeling. Sometimes small things of that time are talked about, like the cold war, but it’s used minimally.

It also surprised me that John Cusack was starring in it, I’m used to him playing in better movies. The movie has its funny moments and the ending is very entertaining, but it’s just not good enough to leave any lasting impression.

Score: 5

  1. Haven’t seen it and I don’t really want to, although guys from the dvd shop im the vicinity vigorously tried to sell me it. maybe if one day it’s on TV, I’ll watch but now – no.

  2. I thought this movie was very funny. I laughed throughout the whole thing pretty much. One thing you have to remember is that it’s geared toward a certain group of people, mainly those who were alive and old enough to remember some of the silly stuff that goes on in this movie about the 80s. Younger people probably wouldn’t get the jokes. Just my two cents.

    • Well, comedy is a very personal thing anyway. I grew up in the eighties so I got most of the things they wanted to make jokes about, I just didn’t think they were very funny. I can imagine other people will like this movie though.
A comedy which i love, but not a lot of people like is Kung Pow for example.
